But you get that pretty late in the game, so you’ll be suspiciously slow moving for most of the experience. I understand the gameplay rationale behind this as mobility in spirit of the north increases greatly with proper use of Spirit Dashes. Foxes can often run around 30-45 miles per hour and have excellent stamina, so it’s funny as hell to play as one who has the stamina of a middle-aged human survival horror character. I’m far from an expert on foxes, but this is ridiculous. While holding the Run button, it will run for about six seconds before running out of stamina, then taking another five or six seconds before it can run again. It can run, but it’s only for a bizarrely short time. There were many times I couldn’t land a jump or had to reorient because the fox just wasn’t able to transfer to surfaces properly. A further complication is the often extremely poor collision detection. It’s difficult to be precise as the fox’s movements aren’t very specific or weighty enough to land exactly where you want most of the time. There’s also a lot of platforming, but the controls are shaky. As such, most of the game is just looking for flowers and powering statues, which isn’t particularly interesting. These can change things in the environment, including opening trails and raising or lowering water levels. The way the general progression works is that you have to be dropped into an area and move on, which is usually accomplished by getting spirit energy from a flower and then transferring it to a statue that acts as a switch.

Shortly after, a series of events unfolds, with the fox being drafted into the fight against corruption and gaining the ability to absorb spirit power from flowers and statues. Spirit of the north starts off pretty weak and mostly just lets the fox run forward through linear environments before hitting the ghost fox. It’s pretty generic, but it gets the job done. The corruption is red and the fox’s spirit powers are blue, meaning you’ll see a lot of really familiar color-coding around. The game’s story focuses more on the fox meeting a ghost fox and setting off to clean up flecks of corruption in order to eliminate it completely. It mainly focuses on natural environments with snow-covered fields, vast expanses of grass, and ruins stained red from corruption falling from the sky. Spirit of the north is also very nice to look at. This makes the game feel focused and organic, much like Fumito Ueda games ico, but without all the unique and/or bizarre mechanics. There is not a single line of dialogue in the game, but once you get past the main menu you won’t even find any writing. You play as a nameless fox spirit of the north. While it doesn’t bring much new and isn’t as satisfying as I was hoping, fans of peaceful, nature-centric puzzle games might find enough reason to give the game a try.
